Gulf Oil - Pittsburgh Connection

Pittsburgh holds a special place in GT40 racing history as the former headquarters of Gulf Oil, a major force behind the GT40's legendary success. In the 1960s, Gulf Oil’s Executive Vice President, Grady Davis, sponsored the GT40 racing team in partnership with JW Automotive Engineering. This collaboration led to the iconic No. 6 GT40, bearing chassis 1075, achieving back-to-back victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1968 and 1969. The car's unmistakable Gulf Oil blue and orange livery has since become one of motorsport history's most recognizable and celebrated designs.
